Quick answer

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) makes your business easy for AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews to understand, trust and cite. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) structures your content so those tools can lift a direct answer from it. Both build on normal SEO: crawlable pages, structured data, consistent business information and content that answers real questions directly.

Key takeaways

  • AI assistants name only a few sources per answer. Being one of them is the new "page one".
  • GEO and AEO sit on top of SEO. Fix crawlability and speed first.
  • Structured data and consistent business details help AI tools understand exactly who you are.
  • Answer-first content with question headings is the easiest format for AI to quote.
  • llms.txt is a cheap extra, not a magic switch.

Why AI search matters for your business

More and more people skip the list of links and simply ask: "Who is a good interior designer in Ahmedabad?" or "Which CA firm near Prahlad Nagar handles GST for startups?" ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews answer in a paragraph and name only a few businesses or sources.

If you are not one of those names, you are invisible for that search, even if you rank on page one of Google. On the other hand, a visitor who arrives after an AI assistant recommended you usually already trusts you. GEO and AEO are how you become one of the names.

SEO vs AEO vs GEO

The three terms overlap, which is why they confuse people. Here is the simple version:

SEOAEOGEO
GoalRank in search resultsBe the direct answerBe cited inside AI answers
Where it showsGoogle and Bing results, MapsFeatured snippets, voice assistants, AI OverviewsChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot
Main workTechnical SEO, content, linksQuestion-led content, FAQ schemaEntities, schema, mentions, crawler access

They are layers, not alternatives. A site with crawl errors and thin content struggles at all three.

How AI assistants choose which sources to cite

Most AI assistants use a mix of three things:

  1. Live web search. When a tool browses, it pulls pages from a search index and cites the ones that answer the question most clearly. Being properly indexed in both Google and Bing matters here.
  2. Training data. What the model learned from the public web. This changes slowly and rewards brands that are mentioned consistently across many trustworthy sites.
  3. Entity understanding. Whether the model can tell exactly who you are, where you are and what you do. Structured data, consistent profiles and a clear About page all feed this.

Tip: look at which websites an AI assistant cites when it answers a question in your industry. Those are the sites where your business needs to be mentioned or listed.

The 9-step GEO and AEO checklist

1. Let AI crawlers in

Check your robots.txt for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended. Also check your hosting, CDN or security plugin: some bot-protection settings block AI crawlers without you knowing.

2. Get indexed in Google and Bing

Verify your site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, and fix any indexing errors. Many business owners set up Google and forget Bing entirely.

3. Add structured data

Use schema markup for your Organization or LocalBusiness, the people behind it, your services and your FAQs. Add sameAs links to your official profiles so machines can connect them. This tells AI tools, in their own language, what your business is.

4. Keep your business details identical everywhere

Your name, address, phone number, services and description should match across your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Justdial, IndiaMART and other listings. Conflicting details make AI tools less confident about you.

5. Write answer-first content

Use real customer questions as headings and answer each one in the first one or two sentences, then add detail. That is exactly the shape AI tools like to quote.

6. Add specific facts

Numbers, dates, locations, "starting from" prices, years of experience and named examples are far more citable than vague claims like "best quality service".

7. Add an llms.txt file (optional)

llms.txt is a proposed standard: a short Markdown summary of your site for AI tools. Support across AI platforms is still limited, so treat it as a cheap extra, not a replacement for steps 1 to 6.

8. Earn mentions on other websites

Guest posts, local news, industry directories, podcasts and partner pages all teach AI models that your brand exists and what it is known for.

9. Track AI traffic

In Google Analytics 4, create an exploration or segment for sessions whose source contains chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com or copilot.microsoft.com. It shows you what AI search is actually sending you.

How to check whether AI mentions your business

Open ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and ask the questions your customers would ask. Try a few different phrasings:

  • "Who are the best [your service] providers in Ahmedabad?"
  • "What does [your business name] do, and is it any good?"
  • "Compare [your business] with [competitor]."
  • "How much does [your service] cost in Ahmedabad?"

Note whether you appear, what is said about you, whether it is accurate, and which websites are cited. Repeat every month or two: AI answers change as the web changes.

Common mistakes

  • Blocking AI crawlers by accident through a security plugin or CDN setting.
  • Different phone numbers or addresses on different listings.
  • Pages that never state plainly what the business does and where.
  • Hiding key information inside images or PDFs that AI tools cannot read easily.
  • Treating llms.txt as a magic switch while ignoring content and structured data.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. GEO builds on SEO. AI tools that browse the web still rely on search indexes, so crawlable, fast, well-structured pages remain the foundation.

How long does it take to appear in ChatGPT answers?

For AI tools that search the live web, improvements can show within weeks once your pages are indexed and clear. Mentions that come from model training data change more slowly, over months.

Do I need llms.txt to be cited by AI?

No. It is optional and support is still limited. Crawler access, structured data, consistent business information and answer-first content matter much more.

Can small local businesses benefit from GEO?

Yes. AI assistants often answer local questions such as "best dentist near Satellite", and a small business with clear, consistent information can be recommended alongside much bigger names.
